China's railway network to reach 180,000 km by 2030

China's railway network is continuing its rapid expansion, reshaping how millions of people travel and the movement of goods across the nation. By the end of 2024, the country's railway system had reached 162,000 kilometers, including 48,000 kilometers of high-speed rail, according to the China State Railway Group, the national railway operator, on Thursday.

At the company's annual conference in Beijing, Guo Zhuxue, president of the company, revealed ambitious plans for 2025 and 2030.

In 2025, the rail sector is planning to complete 590 billion yuan ($80.83 billion) in infrastructure investments and add another 2,600 kilometers of new rail lines.

At the same time, China's long-term goal is even more impressive: by 2030, the nation aims to have a 180,000-kilometer railway network, with 60,000 kilometers of high-speed rail, revolutionizing how people and goods move across the country.?

In 2024, the railway sector achieved significant progress. Investments surged to 850.6 billion yuan, marking an 11.3 percent increase from the previous year. More than 3,100 kilometers of new rail lines were added, including 2,457 kilometers of high-speed rail, connecting major cities and improving accessibility.

By 2030, China aims to complete a world-class modern railway network that will make travel between major cities possible in just 1-3 hours and support efficient cargo transportation across the nation. The expansion is set to provide significant benefits to both passengers, with faster and more comfortable travel, and businesses, by facilitating more efficient logistics.
