Volkswagen Group China said on Monday that it is to build an ultra-fast charging network with Xpeng, which is to feature over 20,000 terminals across 420 cities and regions in China.

The move follows the two companies' partnership in developing electric vehicles in the Chinese market, the first of which is expected to hit the market in 2026.

The charging network will be developed by CAMS, Volkswagen's joint venture for charging solutions.

Data connectivity will be realized through the two carmakers' in-car systems, mobile apps, and charging infrastructure to offer car owners access to more charging locations.

Volkswagen is advancing its electrification strategy in China. By 2030, the company plans to launch at least 30 all-electric models across its brands, covering every market segment and catering to a wide range of customers.

Additionally, the company said it is also focusing on plug-in hybrid and range-extended electric technologies to adapt its product lineup to better meet the needs of Chinese consumers.

CAMS, established in 2019, is a joint venture between Volkswagen Group China, FAW Group, Wanbang Digital Energy, and JAC Motors.

The venture focuses on creating a comprehensive smart charging ecosystem to provide convenient charging solutions and drive the adoption of electric mobility. To date, CAMS operates over 13,000 charging terminals in 213 cities across China.

Through this partnership, Volkswagen and Xpeng will also explore the development of co-branded ultra-fast charging stations, further accelerating the expansion of the charging network and enhancing collaboration efficiency in charging infrastructure development.
