China issues 4.734 billion green power certificates in 2024

China's issuance of green certificates saw a significant increase in both quantity and efficiency last year, with a total of 4.734 billion green certificates issued, marking a year-on-year growth of 28.4 times, according to data released by the National Energy Administration on Thursday.
Certificates issued for wind power accounted for 1.941 billion certificates, while that for solar power reached 827 million, conventional hydropower accounted for 1.578 billion and biomass power for 381 million, it said.
As of Dec 31, 2024, China had cumulatively issued around 4.96 billion green certificates, of which 3.379 billion were tradable.
China expanded the sectors covered by green certificates this year. It officially began issuing green certificates for conventional hydropower and geothermal energy projects, filling the gap for these energy types and achieving full coverage of green certificate issuance.
