China should not only excel in competitive sports for national glory but also harness the diverse values of sports to enhance public health, boost the economy and uplift livelihoods, said Gao Zhidan, director of China's General Administration of Sport.

Speaking to the media at the "Ministers' Passage" following the closing of the third session of the 14th National People's Congress at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Tuesday, Gao shared key data reflecting the country's growing enthusiasm for snow sports. Since the beginning of this snow season, ski resorts nationwide have welcomed over 190 million visits, reflecting a 22.8 percent increase year-on-year. Of these, the number of skiing enthusiasts from overseas rose by 30.2 percent compared to the previous year. Total consumption at ski resorts across the country surpassed 35 billion yuan.

He emphasized the necessity for the country to pioneer a new approach in developing the sports industry, focusing on developing sport-event-driven economy, outdoor sports and ice-and-snow sports.

Gao stressed the need to better utilize sports' unique role in optimizing urban functions, enhancing city image, boosting rural revitalization, promoting coordinated regional development and increasing openness. This approach will unleash the potential of sports consumption, empowering economic and social development.

Gao also underscored the importance of meeting the diverse sports needs of the public, especially the youth and elderly. This involves upgrading national fitness facilities, expanding mass sports events and fitness products.

"We must drive technological innovation, foster open exchanges, and build on our achievements as an Olympic powerhouse. We are fully preparing for the 2026 Milano-Cortina Winter Games and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. We aim for significant breakthroughs in key events like athletics, football, basketball and volleyball," he stated.

Gao also highlighted the need to resolutely resist the blind idolization of athletes and toxic fandom culture.
