Shanghai student donates hematopoietic stem cells

A senior undergraduate from Shanghai-based East China University of Science and Technology completed a donation of hematopoietic stem cells at Shanghai Huashan Hospital on Tuesday, becoming the 700th donor of hematopoietic stem cells in the city.

Chen Huandong, a student from the School of Information Science and Engineering of the university, said his decision to make the donation was inspired by another student from the school who did the same two years ago.

After signing up for donation, Chen received a call from the Shanghai Branch of the Red Cross Society of China in October, informing him of a successful preliminary match with a patient. He proceeded with the procedure and successfully completed the high-resolution blood sample matching test in January.

To prepare for the stem cell collection, Chen dedicated himself to rigorous exercise, proper nutrition, and a regular sleep schedule. He ran four kilometers daily, ensuring his health was in optimal condition for the donation.

Chen received mobilizing agents for four consecutive days starting from Friday, and began the donation process on Tuesday. He contributed about 200 milliliters of hematopoietic stem cell suspension after over five hours of collection.

"As far as I know, the recipient is a child. I hope that the child can overcome the disease and recover soon, and grow up to be a brave and kind person," said Chen.
