Sugar'n spice

(That's Shanghai)

Sugar'n spiceIn Shanghai, temptations abound. From handmade chocolates to the best cheesecake this side of New York, one's waistline is in constant danger of over expansion. But some treats cater to the eyes rather than the taste buds. Renowned French accessories' brand, Lollipops, for example, offers delights that won't add calories.

Their new flagship store carries shoes, bags and other accessories that should prove as popular as French bonbons. Not that the city is in need of yet another fashion spot; indeed, so many shops have opened in the last year that the market is glutted with choice. But Lollipops is ready to lick the competition. “We see the recent boom in fashion shops in Shanghai as encouraging rather than negative," says managing director Xavier Locard. In other words, the local market is savvy enough to separate the sweet from the sour.

And the brand does have a number of advantages, including its innovative use of fabric and design sold at less than big name prices. As sales director Jennifer Sun points out: "Our products are one-of-a-kind. We use high-quality imported materials [which are] different from other products sold in Shanghai."

Indeed, Lollipops' designers' use beads and sequins, ribbon and lace, gold chains and diamantes to create a look that is altogether playful, funky, girlish and sweet. In a word: charming. Much like the boutique itself, with its Queen Anne-influenced cabinets and mirrors.

Oddly, the Paris-based company favors a look that is more Korean or Japanese than French. Which is part of the appeal. Fashion isn't often this much fun. For women who enjoy the style of the moment, without investing a small fortune (bags, RMB 400-700; shoes, RMB 500 and jewelry, RMB 200-400) Lollipops will sweeten the wardrobe without bursting a button.
