Sex museum moves to Jiangsu ( 2003-09-12 13:46)
The Chinese Ancient Sex Culture Museum, the first of its kind in China with
the most extensive collection of exhibits, will be moved from Shanghai to Tongli
Town in neighbouring Jiangsu Province next April, Shanghai Morning Post reports.
Liu Dalin, the museum's founder and an expert on sex culture, announced the
move to local media.
The museum was opened in 1999 with sponsorship from a major State-owned
company.
As the topic of sex was still considered taboo in the daily life of Chinese,
the administration did not allow the museum to advertise, leading to financial
difficulties for the gallery.
In 2001, Liu was forced to move from busy downtown Nanjing Road to a rather
distant, but more affordable location in the Jing'an District, where visitor
numbers dropped sharply.
Liu has since decided to relocate the museum to Tongli, 80 kilometres from
Shanghai.
