Cars for NPC deputies enjoy no privileges this year By (Xinhua) Updated: 2004-03-07 11:10
The traffic is running relatively smoothly along Beijing's Chang'an Avenue
during this year's NPC and CPPCC sessions.
This is because Beijing's transportation authorities are not keeping the
traffic lights green for vehicles carrying NPC and CPPCC delegates. Now they
have to stop at red lights just like everybody else.
In addition, the delegates do not have a lane for their exclusive use.
In the past, other vehicles had to wait, often for a long time, for
delegates' cavalcades to pass through.
The move is widely hailed by residents in the Chinese capital, who have
already been frustrated over the city's traffic congestion.
