Workplace safety not a one-time issue (China Daily) Updated: 2004-06-12 09:58
Continuous efforts are needed to upgrade workplace safety.
Featuring the theme of "People First, Safety First," the third National Work
Safety Month started on June 1. The State Administration for Safety Production
Supervision announced that the focus of this year's activities will be
implementing the State Council's Decision on Strengthening Work Safety and the
Regulation of Work Safety Permits.
It is undeniable that the "work safety month" programme will urge related
departments to strengthen their sense of responsibility and attract more people
to participate in upgrading workplace safety. But such methods risk becoming
formalities.
It would be better if we could cancel such a monthly programme but
concentrate on the daily work of building a safety system implementing useful
measures.
In retrospect, we will find that the themes and requirements of the three
work safety months are actually the same in nature. It is unnecessary to put up
a new programme with a new theme every year.
What's more, inherent work safety laws do not allow any relaxation of their
enforcement at any time. The implementation of the State Council's decision or
other regulations should be insisted all year round.
Work safety is not a one-time deal. But the Work Safety Month programmes send
out that wrong impression that lasting respect for safety can be gained by one
supreme effort.
It will be even more dangerous if related departments relax in other months
when workplace safety is not the focus.
Workplace safety is the basic requirement to realize the "scientific concept
of development." Canceling the Work Safety Month programme means every month
should be devoted to maintaining work safety. All related parties should be
vigilant about work safety - at all times.
