South China's boomtown Shenzhen plans to recruit 3,000 senior professionals from its neighbor Hong Kong to fill up technical and managerial positions, including jobs at local government administrations.

The special economic zone in Guangdong Province will send a team of human resources specialists and business executives from 300 local organizations to Hong Kong in August for the head-hunt, sources with the municipal government said.

The professionals sought include IT engineers, project management professionals, business executives as well as some senior blue collar positions, such as chefs.

The city also aims to recruit government employees from overseas for the first time, to work in urban planning and management, education, public health, culture, science and technology, finance, insurance, securities, transportation and port management sectors.

Meanwhile, an enterprises-based post-doctoral research station in Shenzhen will recruit post-doctoral researchers from Hong Kong universities.

The delegation will also bring 100 high-tech projects, all launched by returned Chinese students from worldwide universities, to seek cooperation with Hong Kong businesses by means of technological transfer, technical cooperation and joint stock operation.

Local officials say the recruitment is a concrete move under the framework of the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA) signed between China's interior regions and Hong Kong.

Between 1992 and 2003, Shenzhen sent four head-hunting delegations overseas and recruited more than 1,700 senior professionals.

Meanwhile, its fast growing economy has drawn 5,700 Chinese graduates from worldwide universities to work there since 2001.
