Wife of executed corrupt official jailed (Xinhua) Updated: 2005-01-07 13:50 Han Guirong, wife of Wang Huaizhong, former
vice-governor of east China's Anhui Province who was executed for corruption,
has been sentenced to 10 years in jail for her involvement in Wang's case.
The verdict was pronounced on Thursday by the People's Court of Anqing city.
The court also ruled that Han's 100,000 yuan (12,000 US dollars) of personal
property should be confiscated and all herillegal earnings retrieved.
Han, 56, was arrested in October 2002 on charges of taking bribes. In May
2004, the Anhui Provincial Procuratorate designatedAnqing City Procuratorate to
lodge public prosecution against her.
Investigations show that Han took advantage of Wang's position to accept
bribes worth 1.2 million yuan (145,000 US dollars) with Wang and could not
account for the 4.8 million yuan (580,000 US dollars) of property they
possessed.
After Wang's case was unveiled in 2002, Han several times transferred and hid
properties worth 5.09 million yuan (602,000 USdollars), said the local
Procuratorate.
Before her arrest, Han was an official in the local financial department. She
married Wang in October 1969.
Wang was executed in February 2004 for taking bribes valued at 5.17 million
yuan (623,000 US dollars) from 1994 to 2001 and possessing 4.8 million yuan that
he could not justify.
