Shanghai seeks energy from wind and sunlight (People's Daily Online) Updated: 2005-03-25 15:45
Facing the "energy bottleneck", Shanghai has carried out preliminary
investigations regarding the renewable energy resources in atmosphere in an
attempt to optimize the city's energy structure.
As learned from the Shanghai Weather Bureau, a detailed report on Shanghai's
wind energy resources has been basically finalized. The report shows costal
regions of Shanghai are rich in wind energy and suitable for generating
electricity via wind.
Developing wind power in most areas of Shanghai is not quite practical due to
influence of city planning and dense buildings. So relevant departments have
turned their attention to developing wind power in coastal regions and on the
sea.
Shanghai is rich in solar energy resources. Statistics show the annual
sunshine duration in Shanghai amounted to 1,930 hours in 2004. The figure
amounts to 2,318 hours in the Chongming Island. Experts therefore propose to
introduce advanced sunlight application system into city construction,
development of the Chongming Island and design of residential
communities.
