(Xinhua)
Updated: 2005-06-07 22:00

Thirty-one people were killed and four others still missing in floods, landslides and mud-rock flows triggered by torrential rains in southwest China's Guizhou Province, according to latest statistics from the Ministry of Civil Affairs Tuesday.

Continuous downpours have been hitting eight cities and ethnic autonomous prefectures in Guizhou since May 31, causing prompt relocation of nearly 20,000 local residents, says a notice posted on the ministry's website.

The ministry kicked off on Tuesday an emergency plan for the disaster relief work in Guizhou, and will send a work team to the front line.

Earlier, a work team composed of officials from several ministries, headed by Vice Minister of Civil Affairs Jia Zhibang, rushed to south China's Hunan Province to help the local disaster relief work.

The team is composed of officials from the State Development and Reform Commission, the ministries of civil affairs, education, finance, communications, water resources, health, and the China Meteorological Administration.

The death toll from flooding in Hunan rose to 87 on Monday, andthe ministries of civil affairs and finance have earmarked to Hunan 18 million yuan (2.2 million US dollars) as disaster relief fund. The Ministry of Civil Affairs also allocated 3,000 tents to the disaster-stricken areas.
