Dozens die as terror attacks hit London

LONDON: Four blasts ripped through London yesterday morning, killing at least 33 and wounding hundreds.

Witnesses saw the top ripped off a double-decker bus near Russell Square, close to King's Cross train terminal, and packed subway trains were hit in apparently co-ordinated blasts.

"You could see bodies on the road outside. There was smoke everywhere. It was carnage," said eyewitness Peter Gordon.

World leaders, including Chinese President Hu Jintao, united to condemn the wave of "barbaric" attacks in London and vowed to defeat terrorism, said British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Flanked by the leaders of the G8 nations, Blair said their annual meeting would carry on regardless of the violence.

"We condemn utterly these barbaric attacks," Blair said, speaking on behalf of all the G8 as well as other world leaders gathered in Scotland for the meeting.

"We are united in our resolve to confront and defeat this terrorism," he added.

A previously unknown group, "Secret Group of al-Qaida's Jihad in Europe", claimed responsibility for the attacks.
