Typhoon Sanvu swirls toward Chinese mainland (Xinhua) Updated: 2005-08-12 17:19
The tropical storm Sanvu is moving with a speed of 20 kilometers per hour
toward the Chinese mainland and is forecast to slam into the coastal areas of
southern Fujian and Guangdong provinces late Saturday night to Sunday.
According to the Fujian Provincial Meteorological Station, Sanvu was located
at 18.4 degrees north latitude and 121.8 degreeseast longitude at 5 a.m. Friday,
770 kilometers from Shantou, a city in south China's Guangdong Province.
Influenced by the typhoon, beginning Friday, rains and strong winds will hit
the whole province of Fujian, and some areas in the province will see heavy to
torrential rains.
The provincial headquarters for flood control and drought relief has urged
localities across the province to get ready for the tropical storm.
Typhoon Matsa, which just left China's mainland, swept through eastern
coastal areas since Aug. 6, dumping torrential rains and causing massive
economic losses in affected areas.
