creating tough competition for traditional jewelers, but consumer advocates warn
buyers to be very careful when purchasing a rock online.

The new online jeweler (www.9diamond.com) claims to sell diamonds for 30 to
70 percent less than similar quality stones sold at department stores.
"We don't need to pay the rent or salaries that department stores do,
enabling us to offer lower prices for diamond jewelry," said a sales woman named
Ling with 9diamond. "We guarantee the quality of the diamond jewelry with
certificates issued by supervision authorities."
Consumers who aren't pleased with their purchase can get a full refund within
15 days - a rule set up to ease fears about buying jewelry online - Ling said.
The company also set up a retail outlet in the Grand Gateway Plaza in Xuhui
District to assure consumers. Consumers can see diamond jewelry there and decide
whether to buy it or not.
Jewelry on sale at the Website ranges from a 0.2-carat single-stone diamond
ring for 3,730 yuan (US$460) to a 1-carat multi-stone ring that sells for 65,840
yuan. Consumers can choose to pay the bill when the jewelry is delivered,
online, or through remittance.
Cheaper diamonds should be good news to young couples, as the stones have
become an important part of weddings in the country.
Wu bin, a 28-year-old white-collar worker in the city, bought an engagement
ring on 51tuangou.com after hearing they were 20 percent cheaper than those sold
in big stores.
