Al Roker實(shí)際上是在作當(dāng)?shù)丶案浇貐^(qū)的天氣預(yù)報(bào)，neck of the woods是指附近地區(qū)，附近一帶。
大家都知道，許多沒(méi)有生命的物體，如工具，瓶子，骨頭，大炮和小提琴都有neck 。在自然界中，neck不僅僅指"脖子"，還可以用來(lái)指一條長(zhǎng)的水體，冰或樹(shù)林。由此類推，neck of the woods說(shuō)的應(yīng)該是一片長(zhǎng)條狀的森林。

19世紀(jì)上半頁(yè)，人們把位于邊遠(yuǎn)森林地區(qū)的拓荒者的聚居地稱做neck of the woods。1839年的《泰晤士報(bào)》上第一次出現(xiàn)過(guò)這樣的用法。在《美國(guó)風(fēng)：新大陸英語(yǔ)》（Americanisms: The English of the New World）一書(shū)中，De Vere這樣描寫一位美國(guó)的拓荒者: "He will. . .find his neighborhood designated as a neck of the woods, that being the name applied to any settlement made in the well-wooded parts of the South-west especially"。
Neck of the woods在今天的英語(yǔ)中仍然非常活潑，而且不單單指邊遠(yuǎn)地區(qū)的聚居地。它現(xiàn)在可以用來(lái)指任何一社區(qū)或地區(qū)（any neighborhood, area or region）。有時(shí)候它被簡(jiǎn)化成neck，例如: "what are you doing in this neck?" （你在這一帶干什么？）
