Today Show節(jié)目中的氣象員Al Roker預(yù)報(bào)天氣時(shí)經(jīng)常說(shuō):"And here's what's happening in your neck of the woods." 想想看,他說(shuō)的neck of the woods是什么地方?
由此類推,neck of the woods說(shuō)的應(yīng)該是一片長(zhǎng)條狀的森林。
在《美國(guó)風(fēng):新大陸英語(yǔ)》(Americanisms: The English of the New World)一書(shū)中,De Vere這樣描寫一位美國(guó)的拓荒者: "He will. . .find his neighborhood designated as a neck of the woods, that being the name applied to any settlement made in the well-wooded parts of the South-west especially"。
它現(xiàn)在可以用來(lái)指任何一社區(qū)或地區(qū)(any neighborhood, area or region)。有時(shí)候它被簡(jiǎn)化成neck,例如: "what are you doing in this neck?"
