“Hat trick”這個(gè)詞最初出現(xiàn)于19世紀(jì)70年代英國(guó)廣為流行的板球比賽中（在殖民時(shí)代，英國(guó)殖民地的球隊(duì)經(jīng)常在國(guó)際比賽中大勝英國(guó)本土的球隊(duì)）。在板球比賽中，“a hat trick”的意思就是一名投球手連續(xù)投出三個(gè)好球而將對(duì)方三名球員淘汰出局，這可是不是一件容易的事情。
因?yàn)椤癶at trick”是連擊三球的意思，在20世紀(jì)初這個(gè)詞組的意思很快就推廣到其他的體育比賽中，指代“連中三元”的意思。在賽馬項(xiàng)目中，它的意思是“the winning of three races by a single jockey in one day”。在足球和曲棍球比賽中，它的意思是“the scoring of three goals by a single player in one game”。
與此同時(shí)，“hat trick”這個(gè)詞組也用在棒球比賽中，通常指的是“hitting for the cycle”：the hitting of a single, double, triple, and home run by a single player in one game, an exceptionally rare achievement.
Hat trick現(xiàn)在已經(jīng)不僅僅用于體育比賽中，其它任何“連續(xù)三次的成功”（any remarkable accomplishment, usually of three successive successes or achievements）， 例如某公司連續(xù)三年成功的經(jīng)營(yíng)或者某位指揮家取得連續(xù)三個(gè)晚上音樂會(huì)舉辦的成功都可以稱“hat trick”。
