Illegal foreign worker expelled

By Hou Liqiang | China Daily | Updated: 2013-12-12 08:14

The foreigner who knocked over a Chinese woman on Dec 2 received administrative detention and a fine and will be expelled from China for working here illegally, Beijing police said on Wednesday.

The foreigner was involved in an accident that was initially reported as the Chinese woman intentionally throwing herself in front of his motorbike with plans to extort the foreigner.

The reports aroused much attention and became a hot topic on Sina Weibo, a popular micro-blogging service. Many netizens criticized the woman, saying she "lost face for all Chinese".

The police found later by checking video taken at the accident site that the foreigner did knock the woman down on Dec 3, which changed public opinion.

The police said on Wednesday that the foreigner broke traffic rules by riding an unlicensed motorbike without a driving license, giving another person a ride while unlicensed and going against traffic.

The man received seven days of administrative detention and was fined 1,500 yuan ($247) for breaking the traffic rules, the police said.

No information about the man's name, nationality or age was given.

The police also found during their investigation that the man and his father were working in Beijing without permission.

For working in China illegally, the young man received another five days administrative detention and a fine of 5,000 yuan, while his father received 14 days of administrative detention and a fine of 10,000 yuan, according to a post on the police official micro blog.

In addition, both the man and his father will be expelled from China, the police said.

The police also said the company that employed the father and son will be fined 20,000 yuan. The company's name was not released.

The police called on foreigners in China to abide by local laws. The police will protect the rights and interests of foreigners according to the law and secure the safety of their work and life in Beijing, and will investigate and punish those who violate Chinese laws, and ensure good social order in the capital, the post said.
