Arabiya TV says Filipino hostage in Iraq freed
(Agencies)
Updated: 2004-07-20 16:14

An Arab television station said a Filipino truck driver held hostage in Iraq had been freed on Tuesday but the report could not be independently confirmed.

Dubai-based Al Arabiya television quoted sources in the Iraqi National Congress party for its report. It showed no footage of truck driver Angelo de la Cruz and gave no details.

A source at the Philippine embassy in Baghdad could not confirm that he had been released.

De la Cruz was expected to be freed after Manila met his captors' demand to pull out its troops from Iraq. They had threatened to behead him.

Monday Manila completed the withdrawal of the few dozen soldiers from its humanitarian contingent, drawing criticism from the United States and the Iraqi government who had urged the Philippines not to bow to pressure from the kidnappers.

An Egyptian hostage seized by guerrillas in Iraq earlier this month was freed Monday.
