Chinese duo win men's C2 Olympic Gold (Xinhua) Updated: 2004-08-28 15:34
Chinese pair Meng Guanliang and Yang Wenjun won China
the 28th gold medal at the Athens Olympic Games when they triumphed in the men's
C2 500m final on Saturday.
Meng and Yang were timed at 1:40.279 for the title, followed by Cuba and
Russia in the second and third places respectively. Romania, Sydney 2000 bronze
medallists, finished fourth.
Just after crossing the finish line none of the competitors were sure of who
had won as six boats finished in less than 0.580 seconds and a photo finish was
needed to split them.
During the race no boat was able to take a clear lead and during the final
few metres it seemed that first place was changing with each stroke.
