Online music sales up tenfold in 2004 (Agencies) Updated: 2005-01-20 01:33
LONDON - Global online music sales rocketed in 2004, with a tenfold
increase to more than 200 million paid-for downloaded tracks, a recording
industry body said.
The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) added that
the fight against hacking and illegal downloads made significant progress as
consumer attitudes and copyright law changed.
The number of legal music sites quadrupled to over 230, while the available
music catalogue has doubled to more than one million songs during the same
period, it said.
The IFPI, which represents over 1,450 record companies worldwide, said the
supply of music available digitally was proliferating across online and mobile
phone platforms.
