Sex-slave gets probation in theft (Shanghai Daily) Updated: 2005-09-29 10:26 Lian Mei, who drugged her
abusive sexual partner, a foreigner, and stole cash, cell phones and other
property, was sentenced to three years' probation yesterday.
The court accepted her account of sexual violence and ruled the robbery was
not premeditated.
Lian, 35, said she was unable to bear the sadomasochistic violence of her
foreign lover, Wouly Francis Pau, who arrived from Europe; his nationality was
not disclosed.
She said she came from Liaoning to Shanghai last December to buy clothing and
cosmetics and met him in a bar.
On hearing the court's sentence, Lian wept because she hadn't expected to be
released. As long as she doesn't break the law during the probation period, she
won't be imprisoned.
When she met Pau she spoke enthusiastically, though her English was not very
good.
She later admitted that because a friend had a foreign boyfriend, she wanted
one too, although she has been divorced.
They had sex that night in Pau's residence and then lived together. Lian soon
found that Pau, a baker, was nine years her senior and enjoyed violent sex. She
said she was often abused and tortured.
She tried to break up and asked Pau to give her some money - he refused,
saying men never pay ex-girlfriends.
Lian didn't leave; instead she put sleeping powder into Pau's wine to avoid a
night of torture so that she could escape. Then she decided to take 5,800 yuan
(US$716) cash, a laptop computer, a digital camera and two mobile phones.
She fled to Shenyang.
